This course studies on the European, Russian and Latin American literary theories such as formalism, structualism, post-structualism and semiotics. It is designed in order to understand the logics of literary criticism, to have a comparative perspective regarding the evoluction of each methodology and finally to develop students' ability to apply these theories to actual writing on their thesis.

Comparative Literature concerns itself with studying literatures from differing national traditions as well as from widely separated historical periods, looking for their similarities and differences. Comparative Literature is also concerned about the interdisciplinary relation between literature and other disciplines such as philosophy, history, psychoanalysis, natural sciences, and culture in general. These general education in the humanities will make an excellent preparation both for an academic and social career.

This course offers a survey of various sociolinguistic theories and methodologies such as variation theory, interactional sociolinguistics, and ethnography of communication. Focus is given to enhancing understanding of the socio-cultural characteristics of English through the examination of various aspects of the relationship between language and social contexts.

In this course students learn how to do the (elementary) scientific study of the Spanish language. They will try to answer the question--what is language and how is represented in the mind. They, as beginner linguists, will acquire knowledge of describing and explaining language and won't be concerned with the prescriptive rules of the language (ie., do not split infinitives).

This course offers an overview of some main areas of Spanish linguistics, such as morphology, syntax, and semantics. Throughout the course both descriptive and theoretical perspectives on these issues will be discussed in detail. Research methodology for each issue will also be addressed.

This course offers an introduction to the Spanish morphology to describe specific aspects of the structure of words, principles of word formation, including derivational and inflectional morphology. Relationship between inflectional morphology and other components of grammar will also be discussed throughout the course.
