In September 2007, Department of Medical Science of Meridian was launched as an interdisciplinary graduate program under Acupuncture & Meridian Science Research Center (AMSRC), that was established in the College of Korean Medicine, Kyung Hee University with financial support from the Korean Ministry of Education, Science & Technology in 2005.
With the objective of scientific remodelling and globalization of Korean traditional medicine, especially in acupuncture and meridian theory, the program is focused on nurturing highly qualified researchers required for the academic, clinical and industrial fields of complementary and integrative medicine, acupuncture & meridian sciences, and providing highly sophisticated curriculum and education programs in clinical & basic research for academic organizations of Korean medicine and local Korean physicians in both Korea and other countries.
The goal of our program is the construction of research platform and interdisciplinary education protocols, in order to lay the foundation of advanced studies and research in both the integrative medicine (based on Korean traditional medicine) and medical science. The program lecturers are comprised of 10 professors whose majors are Korean medicine, neurobiology, molecular biology, biophysics, pharmacology, veterinary acupuncture, molecular imaging, biomedical engineering, genomics, and proteomics etc. Through this program, the education capability of the AMSRC will improve and a number of knowledgable scientists with world-class experimental technology of meridian science will emerge. The first recruitment and registration process was open in November 2007 for college students with bachelor's degree who wanted to join to the Ph.D. or M.S. courses of our graduate programs. The first spring semester class was held in May of next year.
After graduation, the students will be granted Ph.D. or Ms of Philosophy, Medical Science or Korean Medical Science, and are able to be employed as researchers of complementary & integrative medicine in USA and Europe, professors of Universities or Colleges, professional researchers of Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and other government Institutes in Korea, and researchers of pharmaceutical companies, clinical institute, and biomedical engineering industry etc.
