Ray-finned Fish are sometimes known as bony fish because of their relatively hard bones.
Ray-finned fish are the most primitive of all vertebrates and are the ancestors of the first vertebrate species to live on land. Ray-finned fish are found in any sort of water environment, and can be found thousands of meters below the ocean’s surface or even in a shallow mountain brook. These fish evolved rapidly during the paleozoic period, hence these types of fish have a plethora of different classifications. Most creatures that breath through gills are, in fact, ray-finned fish. The oldest and most primitive forms of ray-finned fish are ‘armored fish’ which had boney plates to protect them.
